 Tweaked & Modded, They're Even Better. What's left to say about about Martin D-18s that hasn't already been overly romanticized? Actually, plenty. They've changed numerous times. My 1969/70 D-18 has that woody sound that takes over in a humble honest way. While my 1974 puts forth a slick growl, but also icy, stinging high notes. Yet, both are D-18s. ________________________________________________________ 1969/1970 Martin D-18 - One of the Last Legendary Lightweight 1960s D-18s I was browsing the acoustic guitars in Seattle's beloved used music store (now closed), when I came across a battered "1970" Martin D-18. It had obviously survived a REALLY bad night. Somewhere, someone had saved it. And had it competently repaired. I'd also faced rough times. So out of raw empathy, I instantly knew I had to play it. I respectfully lifted it up out of its wall rack, and knew right away. I owned a high quality 1974 D-18. And, no doubt, this D-18 was far too lightweight to be a 1970s. It must be a late 1960s D-18. I calculated. Back in the late 60s, it still took Martin several months to finish a dreadnought. Which would indicate Nazareth started building this D-18 in fall/winter of 1969. And released it in early 1970. OK. Time for the ultimate test. Play it. And yes, there it was. That 1960s D-18 woody tone that went straight through everything. What more did I need to know? A 1960s D-18 for a fraction of the usual price? I pulled out my credit card, and never looked back. Sometimes known as suspension bridge high action. Which I fixed. The original owner had obviously played it for awhile. And then hid it. Maybe in a closet. For decades. In its blue plastic "steal me" case. No doubt, it was built by one of Martin's best luthiers. 70s Martins can be iffy. But a few of the experienced guys were still there. In addition to its quality woods, it has a beautiful hand-crafted neck, and superior detailing. With a bit of wear above the sound hole. As expected.. Compared to my 1969/70 D-18's classic 60's woody tone, it has a smooth modern tone profile. With a clear, balanced authoritative tonal range throughout all registers. And if pushed in the upper registers, it has plenty of bite. The mods definitely improved its sonic statement.
